Can we not agree that tonight is a suitable occasion to render the marital due to our spouse? And single brothers and sisters, can we not devote that time to extra personal study instead?

Hello Everyone :-)
by new one ini've only recently joined but i've been lurking for well over a year.
i'll just start with a bit of my story so you'll have a better idea on were i'm coming from, i've read that much of most of your posts that i feel i already know you all anyway lol.. i'm 32 years old now and for most of my life i've had jw's around me at times, my mom used to study on and off with them all through my child hood alough she never took the plunge i'm not sure why because even to this day she say's she holds the same beliefs but somethings held her back so there's doubt somewhere!.
anyway, having had the magazines around me for most my life i'd read them from time to time, but, when i reached about 17 years old i discovered nightclubs, alcohol and, well you know the rest ;-).. fast forward to my early 20's and i'd had a failed attempt at setting up my own business, my parents had split up after 25 years together and long story short i had a nervous breakdown.

Hi Chris! I'm an ex-JW but I'm not bitter - just honest. Good for you for dodging a bullet.

Does Anyone Know the Reading Level of Society Lit?
by Band on the Run inthe thread on pros of being a jw (not filled with many) led me to wonder if anyone has scientifically assessed the reading level of the average wt, awake, books.
i thought 5th grade but it is a guess.
software exists now to evaluate reading comprehension levels necessary to read documents.

If anyone is truly motivated, you can type the text from an article into Word and then run the spell check. If you have the "check grammar" option enabled, it will tell you the grade level of your writing. I'm not much of a typist, and I'm too lazy to boot up my work computer and dig up a magazine. I'm not really sure how accurate Word's analysis is, it always claims that the reports I write are 10th grade level and they seem really simple to me. If I were rating my own writing, I'd class it at around 8th grade because of the technical jargon. Otherwise, maybe 5th or 6th grade. I try to make my writing really simple so I don't get a lot of questions from the reviewers.

IDK. My kids could read it just fine by the time they were in 3rd grade, but comprehension of the material is complicated by the fact that it is gibberish and double talk. My poor kids attended meetings from birth and still couldn't begin to explain any of the doctrines. The farthest they ever got was "we don't celebrate birthdays because Herod had John the Baptist beheaded." Of course, the WTBTS would say that I should have taught them better, but trying to teach that nonsense is like trying to nail jello to a tree. It just won't stick. I'm a fairly intelligent person, college educated and all, and *I* can't parrot back the party line either. It's like my brain just refused to retain the information - and maybe a large part of the reason I stayed in for over 10 years. I never noticed the discrepancies and flip flops because I couldn't retain the information I was reading. Oddly, I can remember details of cases I worked years ago without even referring to my reports. Peoples' names, details of the issues I uncovered, the physical layout of the offices I was in - I can remember that stuff just fine.

Anyone EVER had an Elder with a beard??? I can't remember even one!
by Witness 007 inthe society once even pictured jesus as clean shaven for many years in it's books.
beards were "sort of" banned.
i don't remember a single brother who had privledges with a beard....anyone else?.

I've never seen an elder or servant with a beard. I live in the rural midwest (US). My husband prefers to wear a beard due to the ingrown hairs and irritation caused by shaving. He received a lot of "counsel" on that before he gave in and shaved. He's grown it back now.

The Beast-Tower #1: Questions from Beastly Readers: Should Christians Drink Water?
by sd-7 inshould christians drink water?.
how refreshing it can be to satisfy oneself with a cold beverage on a warm day!
many christians choose to do this after a long day of zealous kingdom preaching.

Do you miss "dressing up" for the meetings?
by dozy ini was thinking about this the other day when doing a bit of tidying up of my wardrobe.
all the kh suits are now pushed to the back of the wardrobe and i am seriously thinking about a visit to the charity shop to get rid of most of them.. for me one of the (few) enjoyable aspects of being a jw was getting dressed up.
my secular work very rarely involves putting on a dress suit & tie so i miss getting dressed up - smart suit , tie , shiny shoes , slapping on the aftershave.

I have to wear "professional" clothes at work, so I always tended to wear the same stuff to work and the KH. I refuse to wear pantyhose, so I always favored really long skirts. My feet won't tolerate heels, so I have a basic "uniform" that consists of a short sleeved sweater, long skirt, and clogs. If it's cool, I wear a cardigan on top of the sweater and if it's super cold I wear boots. It's comfortable, and I will probably continue to wear this type of clothing even though I intend to never set foot in a Kingdom Hall again.
On the other hand, my husband hated dressing up and he *really* hated shaving. I doubt he'll ever put on a suit again except for formal night on cruises or maybe for a fancy dinner on our anniversary. His beard has already grown in nicely.

Our latest "Gee it's great not to be a JW" moment. Share yours!
by Open mind inrecently my son had a minor injury that required a trip to the emergency room.
the admitting nurse asked us a ton of questions and then this:.
nurse: do you have a religion?.

Cons of being a jehovah's witness
by raxxxx inwhat could u list as negative things as being a jw/ex jw for example when u were growing up etc that still affext u now?.

not developing relationships with non-JW relatives. my kids barely know their cousins and have never met my father. of course, there is still time to build those relationships now that we are out. the other big negative to me is how we constantly put off doing things because we were so busy with meetings and service - it took us over a year to finish remodeling a bathroom and bedroom because we had so little time to work on it.
